Exceptional 19th Century neoclassical French or English marble plaque or frieze, in original gilt ornamented frame, depicting Flora, the Roman goddess of flowers and of the season of spring, surrounded by roses and attended by a cherub. Very high quality carving and detail, made sometime between 1865 and 1880. In original mounting with original period rectangular shaft nails.

Interesting medallion embedded on reverse indicating the design received an award from the Society of Arts (also known as the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce,) a British organization committed to finding practical solutions to social challenges, founded in 1754. Medallion is labeled "Arts and Commerce Promoted" and depicts Mercury and Minerva

16 1/4 inches by 8 1/2 inches framed. Marble piece is 12 3/4 inches by 5 inches.
