SIGNED C. 1870 BARBEDIENNE FRENCH BRONZE & BRASS "MODERATOR" OR CARCEL LAMP GILT BRONZE BUST

Very fine French bronze and brass Barbedienne "moderator" or carcel lamp. With signed gilt bronze bust of woman and large cylindrical bronze center section with three high relief figural muses. Made in Paris at the foundry of Ferdinand Barbedienne around 1870. An electrification of an earlier gas/oil powered lamp, excellent condition throughout. Few examples are offered with both the lower bust and central bronze figures. 

 

Signed on the back of the bust "F. Barbedienne Fondeur" along with the raised seal "Reduction Mecanique A. Collas," for the technique developed by his business partner Achille Collas for reducing museum statues to miniatures.

Originally powered by oil or petrol, the key and dial for adjusting the original oil portion of the lamp have been retained for authenticity but are disabled. This lamp has been recently, professionally rewired. The light sockets, inserts, cord and plug have all been replaced for safe, reliable operation. The light sockets are mounted on adjustable pivot joints. The felt pad on the underside of the lamp has also been replaced to protect whatever surface it is displayed on. All you need to do is add a lampshade of your choice!
